Kitchen & Bath

An outdated kitchen may be inconvenient and unappealing and behind-the-times baths can be downright demoralizing.  But in today’s economy it doesn’t pay to go overboard and over-spend on a bathroom or kitchen remodel. A major remodel only strains your wallet. This is where Mr. Handyman can help—fixing and replacing key elements that make your bathroom or kitchen great spaces, not to mention more functional.

Countertop repairs

Countertops: After

Countertops: After

Countertops go bad for a number of reasons. Tiles break and grout crumbles. Formica burns and granite can chip. We can fix most of these but not all. Mr Handyman can repair most surfaces and we can replace them when repair is not an option.

Formica can be replaced but the best option for doing this usually includes removing the old Formica before installing new.

Grout can be sealed, replaced or even refreshed. As long as the grout is in good shape, about all that is needed is to clean and reseal it. If it’s stained it can be refreshed with the use of colorized sealants that give the grout new color. You can even change the color of the grout from what it was originally. Ask us how.

Disposal Replacement

 Disposal

Garbage disposals fail for a number of reasons. If they jamb on a hard food item they may just jamb and need to be cleared and reset. Before calling a handyman check the rotation of the grinder using the disposal (angled allen) wrench supplied with the unit. Use this wrench from underneath and do not stick your hand in the disposal. If it’s rotating freely then check to be sure the reset button typically located on the bottom is pushed in. If it’s still not working then it might have passed on and is a prime candidate for replacement. Disposals are not designed to be repaired so the best solution is to get a new one and swap it out. We recommend ¾ horse power or greater to handle the heavy stuff but the more expensive ones don’t grind any better, they are just quieter. Give us a call if we can help.

Caulk Repair

 Caulk

Caulk is a flexible sealant that is designed to seal between two rigid surfaces. Walls, tubs, sinks are rigid and need to be sealed but they will continue to move relative to the other items they are next to and need to be sealed with a flexible caulk.

If your caulk is old and needs to be replaced we can help. The old caulk needs to be completely cleaned off the surfaces before new can be applied. We use utility knives to cut it out and chemicals to clean the surface. The surfaces also need to be very clean and dry so the new caulk will adhere.

If your shower needs to be re-caulked we recommend that you not use it for a day before hand so it can be mostly dry and we also recommend that you not use is for a day or two after the new caulk is applied so it will cure properly. They do make a fast curing caulk but this product is the opposite of green.

Toilet repairs

 Toilet Rebuild Kit

Toilets that run more than once per flush should be rebuilt or replaced. Doing an adjustment is usually a temporary fix. If the mechanism is old and going bad then an adjustment will not last very long. When toilets go bad it’s time to rebuild or replace.

A total toilet rebuild requires replacing all of the mechanisms except the wax ring. The rubber seal, tank bolts between the tank and the base, the flapper and flapper seat and the fill valve and supply hose.

Once rebuilt, a toilet trouble free another 5 to 10 years.

New toilet replacements usually require replacing the things not replaced in a rebuild. The wax ring, flange bolts and supply line. In some cases we may need to replace the right angle shut off so the water can be turned off if something goes wrong.

Once replaced, a new toilet should be caulked around the base leaving a couple of inches at the back open. Why leave a space open? It’s to be sure that the flange seal is in good shape. If the seal is leaking you won’t find out until the floor is damaged. Leaving a small space allows seeping water to escape and be located much quicker.

How to buy a toilet

 Buy-Toilet

All new toilets meet the new water usage requirements so you no longer need to pay attention this. Instead there are three things that are most important. Style, flush and height.

Style is what you want the toilet to look like in your bathroom. Only you can decide this one. Round or oval bowls are included here and are a style choice.

Flush is how well the toilet flushes. Not all new toilets are alike and in most cases you can get a flush rating that will help guide you here.

Lastly is height or comfort. The standard height toilet seat is a couple of inches lower than the toilet that has a comfort height rating. This is again a personal preference but older people will find that comfort height will be easier to sit down and stand up because the seat is just bit taller.

You don’t need to spend the maximum amount to get the best. A good toilet can cost as little as $150. It might be a bit plain but if it has a good flush rating it should work fine.

Did you know that in may areas you may qualify for a rebate by replacing your toilet? This rebate is usually offered by your water utility. Check with your water utility to see if they are offering this program.
